Why is Leather so Special?

Leather is very special due to its unique characteristics. First of all, it is a natural product and retains the natural qualities of its basic raw material, that is, the animal skin or hide. Next it is durable, usually lasting a life time if properly taken care of. The distinguishing qualities of leather are elasticity, suppleness, breathability and strength. Again, thermal insulation, water resistance, air and water vapor permeability are some of the qualities which no other material can accomplish. Also, it has the ability to retain its shape and performance under varying forces of moisture and temperature. The quality of leather depends on the structure of the animal skin or hide and also the mechanical and chemical processes that it undergoes during its transformation from the raw material to the finished product.
