Leather is one of the oldest materials used by man. It is a natural material which is converted into useful shape and form through a wide range of chemical processes. It is made from the skins (of small animals) and hides (of big animals) of a different variety of animals. The major phases of leather production can be classified as the Preparation Stage, Tanning, Crusting and Finishing. The animal skin or hide is first cleaned and processed. Then it undergoes various chemical processes of which Tanning may be considered as the major process. The final outcome is a strong and supple material which is generally called as leather.
